At the Garden Terme, well-being is part of history
Hotel Garden Terme nowadays renews the centuries-old bond between the Republic of Venice, “The Serenissima”, and the thermal tradition of the Euganean Hills area.
La storia
📌 The extraordinary qualities of the waters rich in thermal salts have been known since ancient times: in the 14th century they are even mentioned in the treatise “De causa salsedinis aquarium” by Jacopo Dondi dell’Orologio, personal physician of Francesco Petrarca. A fame that has remained alive throughout history.
📌 In the 15th century, the Doges of Venice began to come to the thermal baths in S. Pietro Montagnon (the ancient name of Montegrotto Terme) and, as supreme commanders of the troops, they also hosted the Great Captains, sick from war causes, as was the case with the famous Captain of Fortune Gattamelata.
P.S. If you walk past the Basilica of St. Anthony in Padua, stop in front of the equestrian monument created by Donatello: you are standing right in front of the illustrious Gattamelata.
📌 In the 18th century, the “Serenissima Republic” had the health properties of the thermal baths certified by the authoritative College of Doctors of the University of Padua. This is how thermal medicine was born.
FASCINATING FACT:
Did you know that the ancestors of our family can be traced back to the German warriors known as Gotward, hired by the Captains of the Republic of Venice, who arrived in the area of the Euganean Hills and Montegrotto between the 15th and 16th centuries? The surname was then Italianized as Gottardo, but the link with the Thermal Baths of the Doges has remained unchanged.
